Joe ArmettaI grew up in Shirley, NY and graduated from William Floyd High School in 1985. I was involved with the Campus Life Club in our high school and Sherry Scelsi was our leader.
One of the best things about Campus Life was knowing that I was not alone. As a Christian in a public high school, I often felt like I was the only Christian in that school. It was difficult to make the right decisions when faced with choices between what I knew I should do and what I wanted to do. When I got involved with CL, I learned that I wasn’t the only one in the school who was attempting to live a right life. Initially, I was reluctant to join. I had not been living the way I knew I should, and I was embarrassed of what my “friends” would say if they found out I was a Christian. I wasn’t ashamed of being a Christian, I was ashamed of my lifestyle and how that would affect other people’s view of Christ. My dilemma was that Sherry Scelsi was friends with my mother. I HAD to participate. And I am glad I did. I made some new friends from that group, and I was able to finally take the stand I knew I should. I learned what it means to NOT be ashamed of the Gospel. After high school, I went to Bible College. During a summer break I joined the CL/YFC staff as a summer intern and worked with a friend, Peter Cannata, in the Centereach, Long Island area. Since graduating college, I have been to Africa as a missionary and have served in a few churches in the US as a youth minister. I am currently living in Pennsylvania, with my wife and two children, and attending Holy Trinity CE Church. I am also serving in the church as the Youth Minister. Over the years I have had experiences with various CL/YFC chapters and all have been positive. I would strongly recommend your involvement in your local chapter. |
